Slating & Tiling in Newcastle.
Natural slate, concrete and clay tiling by time-served roofers. Whether it's a handful of slipped slates or a whole elevation re-laid, we match the existing covering and fit it so it stays watertight for decades, not seasons.
Slate or tile — which is right for your roof?
Most houses around Gosforth and Jesmond were built with natural slate, and there's a reason it's lasted a century: it's dense, it doesn't absorb water and it weathers rather than degrades. Concrete tile is heavier and cheaper, clay sits somewhere between the two for cost and lasts nearly as well as slate. What matters more than the material is the pitch of your roof and what's already on it — go too light a covering on too shallow a pitch and it will leak whatever you spend.
- Natural Welsh and Spanish slate, in matched sizes and gauges
- Concrete interlocking and plain tiles
- Clay pantiles and plain tiles, including reclaimed to match
- Ridge, hip and valley work in mortar or dry-fixed systems
- Snowboards and verge detailing
How we work
Every job starts with a free survey so we can see the covering, the pitch and the state of the battens underneath. You then get a fixed written quote. On a partial re-slate we reuse sound salvaged material wherever it matches, which keeps the roof looking right and the cost down. See our full range of roofing services if the job turns out to need more than tiling.
- Free survey — covering, pitch, battens and fixings assessed
- Fixed written quote covering access, materials and labour
- Scaffold or tower erected where the work needs it
- Area stripped, battens gauged and renewed as required
- New or salvaged slate/tile laid to the correct headlap
- Ridge, hips and verges finished, site cleared
What it costs
A small patch repair is a fixed-price call-out. A full elevation depends on the material, the pitch, access and how much of the batten needs renewing. Natural slate costs more than concrete but outlasts it by decades, so on a house you intend to keep it's usually the cheaper option per year.

Can you match my existing slates?
Usually, yes. We'll match size, gauge and colour as closely as the material allows, and reuse sound salvaged slates from your own roof where we can — that's the best match you'll get. On very old or unusual coverings we'll show you the closest option before ordering.
Is slate better than concrete tile?
Slate lasts longer — 80 to 100 years against 40 to 60 for concrete — and it's lighter, which matters on older roof timbers. Concrete costs less up front. On a house you're staying in, slate is usually the better value over time.
Can you just replace a few slipped slates?
Yes. Small repairs are a fixed-price call-out. If we get up there and find the problem is more widespread we'll tell you before doing the work, not after.
Do I need scaffold for a small repair?
Not always — a tower or a roof ladder is enough for a handful of slates at low level. Anything at height, on a steep pitch or over a long run needs proper scaffold, and we'll price that in rather than cut corners on access.
How long does re-slating an elevation take?
Typically two to four days for a single elevation on a standard house, once access is up.
