Capping over versus replacing

A lot of firms will screw a uPVC cap over your existing timber fascia. It's quick and it's cheap and it looks fine for about two years. The problem is the timber underneath is usually the reason you're replacing it — and now it's rotting in the dark, unventilated, with the gutter still hanging off it. We take the old timber off and fit new boards to the rafter feet.

What we do

Old boards come off, the rafter feet get inspected and any rotten ends cut back and repaired, then new uPVC boards go on with a felt support tray at the eaves so the underfelt drains into the gutter rather than behind it. Ventilation is maintained or added — capping a soffit up without vents is how you get loft condensation. New guttering at the same time makes sense since it has to come off anyway.

What it costs

Priced by the metre run and by how much timber repair the rafter feet need. Doing the guttering at the same time is significantly cheaper than doing it later, because the access and the removal are already paid for.

Should I cap over or fully replace?

Fully replace. Capping traps rotting timber in an unventilated space and leaves the gutter fixed to a board that's already failing. It's cheaper on the day and more expensive within a few years.

What colours can I have?

White, black, anthracite grey, rosewood and light oak woodgrain are the common ones. We'll show you samples against the house before ordering.

Do I need to replace the guttering too?

Not necessarily, but it has to come off to fit the fascia — so refitting old guttering costs almost as much in labour as fitting new. Most people do both.

How long does it take?

A standard semi-detached house is typically two to three days including guttering, once access is up.

Will it stop my loft getting damp?

It helps, if ventilation is the cause. Old timber soffits often ventilate by simply being gappy; a sealed uPVC replacement without vents makes condensation worse. We fit vents as standard.
