Roofing built for
Heaton's housing stock.

Most of South Heaton was built as Tyneside flats between the late 1800s and the First World War, laid out in long grid-pattern streets with back lanes behind. One roof covers two homes, an upstairs flat and a downstairs flat, so a leak above one often shows up as a stain in the other. Rear offshoots with their own small roofs, shared chimney stacks on the party walls and valleys between neighbouring roofs are where we find most of the trouble on these streets.

High Heaton is different. It was laid out as a council estate between the wars, so the roofs there are newer and simpler, usually tiled, with ridges and verges that need re-bedding or replacing as the mortar gives up. Whichever end of Heaton you live in, we start by getting on the roof and finding the actual cause. If a few slates, a ridge or a section of flashing will fix it, that is what we quote for.

Our base is on Northfield Road in Gosforth, a short drive across Jesmond Dene from Heaton, so we can get to you quickly and come back if anything needs looking at again. You deal with the people who survey the roof and do the work. We know the back lanes, the parking and the scaffold access on these streets, and we build that into the price from the start.

Heaton roofing questions.

How much does a new roof cost in Heaton?

A full re-roof on a typical Heaton terrace, Tyneside flat or semi usually lands between £6,000 and £12,000. Size, the covering you choose, chimneys and scaffold access from the back lane all change the figure, and larger detached houses can fall outside that range. We give a fixed written price after a survey.

We own the upstairs flat. Who pays for the roof?

On a Tyneside flat the roof normally belongs to the upper flat, but some deeds share the cost with the flat below. Check your title deeds or lease before work starts. We are happy to price the job for both owners and send the same written quote to each of you.

Is Heaton in a conservation area?

Most of Heaton's housing is outside Newcastle's conservation areas, though Jesmond Dene and the Lower Ouseburn Valley are designated, and Heaton Park and Armstrong Park are on the national register of historic parks. Like-for-like roof repairs and re-roofs on a house outside a conservation area do not usually need planning permission. If your home is on the edge of one of these areas, we will check with the council before we start.

How quickly can you get out for an emergency leak?

We aim to get out the same or next day for emergency leaks and make the roof watertight. Once it is safe and dry, we come back to survey the roof and give you a written price for the permanent repair.

Do you work for landlords and letting agents in Heaton?

Yes. Heaton has a lot of rented flats and student houses, and we regularly deal with landlords and agents. We can arrange access with tenants, send photos of the problem and the finished repair, and invoice the landlord or agent directly.
