What dry fixing actually means

Traditionally ridge and hip tiles are bedded on a mortar fillet. Mortar cracks — it's a rigid material sitting on a roof that moves and freezes — and once it cracks, the tiles work loose and water gets in. A dry-fixed system replaces the mortar with a mechanical fixing: a ridge batten, a ventilated roll and a screw fixing into each tile. Nothing to crack, and it ventilates the ridge line at the same time.

Why it matters more than it sounds

This is the single most cost-effective upgrade on most older roofs in Newcastle. Cracked ridge mortar is behind a large share of the leaks we're called out to, and re-bedding it in mortar just restarts the same twenty-year clock. Dry fixing ends it. It's also now required under BS 5534 for new and re-roofed work, so it comes as standard on any re-roof we do.

Is dry ridge better than mortar?

Yes, on almost every measure. It doesn't crack, it doesn't need redoing, it ventilates the roof space and it holds the tiles down mechanically in high wind. Mortar's only advantage is a slightly lower up-front cost.

Do I have to have dry ridge on a new roof?

Effectively, yes. BS 5534 requires mechanical fixing of ridge and hip tiles on new and re-roofed work, so it's standard on any re-roof we carry out.

Will it look different from mortar?

Barely. The units sit close to the tile line and are colour-matched. Most people can't tell from the ground, and the verge units look tidier than a crumbling mortar edge.
